he circular villages

The circle is the basis of the circular villages.

The original planning of this type of village is explained by the relief of the land, also the social organisation peculiar to village life in this period (9th - 10th century), the ease with which the inhabitants could defend their community & not by the ruling gentry.

The houses, with their blind windows on the exterior facing walls, served as ramparts. The entrance to the village was by one main gate, perhaps two. A sign above the entrance & doors stating l' " Assemblée des Consuls", the municipal administration in this period.

There are approximately fifteen medieval circular villages in our region : Alaigne, Alairac, Bellegarde, Brugairolles, Cailhau, Cailhavel, Donazac, La Force, Lasserre de Prouilhe, Mazerolles, Montclar, Preixan, Villeneuve les Montréal…without forgetting Bram, neighbouring town on the Lauragais plain.
