of open spaces. From the towers of Carcassonne, to the capital of
the audois carnival, the Malepère Massif offers 500km² to be explored
by the nature lover with superb view points over the plains of Carcassonne,
the Corbières, the Mouthoumet massif, the Limouxin, the Pyrenées,
the Lauragais, the Cabardès & the Montagne Noire.
Exiting Carcassonne, take the
D18 until ...

Retrace your steps & follow the
directions for Alairac.
ALAIRAC
Picturesque
village on the outskirts of the Malepère Massif, Alairac dominates
the plain that is dissected by the Canal du Midi. The ancient
forest of the Massif is full of mushrooms & wild flowers. Vines
& cereals grow well in this fertile soil. Alairac possesses a
rich historical & architectural heritage, & is a magnificient
round village : Rond Saint Germain, a church dating from the beginning
of the 13th century with a norman church tower & a very beautiful
gothic porch.
By the D18 you will reach the
centre of the Malepère Massif.
At
the Crossroads of the Four Paths, borne 12 (kilometre-marker/milestone),
or at the Mont Naut, the panoramic view points are, in particular,
la Piège, the Carcassonne plain, the High Valley of the Aude &
the Pyrenées in the background.
Take the D318 towards ...
VILLARZEL-DU-RAZES
One of the
points of interest in this hillside village is its 16th century
château & its cul de lampe towers. It is also a starting point
for ramblers.
Follow the D318. At the fork,
take the right fork in the direction of Malviès.
MALVIES
Its church
has a typical bell tower.
If you take the left turn, you
will come across….
SAINT-MARTIN-DE-
VILLEREGLAN
For lovers
of architecture, they will discover old mansions, the Norman church
with its superb stained glass windows & the Calvary at the entrance
to the village.
